HP-AMS Driver causes ESXi memory leak

So basically I had a customer hit by a known HP-AMS driver issue (KB2085618), the symptons were as follows;

  • Unable to vMotion a VM to another host, gives “operation timed out error”

  • If power off VM, vMotion a machine to another host, and then power on, you get the following error “Could not start VMX: msg.vmk.status.VMK_NO_MEMORY”

ESXi memory leak

This issue is caused by a memory leak in the driver which fills the SWAP memory of the ESXi host, making it unable to response to any requests at all,

For example, trying to enable SSH;

Veeam upgrade to v8 – Enterprise Manager fails with Access Control List error

So the other day I blogged about the Veeam v8 upgrade, and as mentioned my Enterprise Manager didn’t work, giving the error;

The Access Control List is not in canonical form and therefore cannot be modified.

Embracing Social Media in the IT world

So this domain name was purchased in April 2014, and the blog created at the same time.

I used to teach CompTIA courses, and therefore my main idea, which I haven’t forgotten about, is to create materials (E-books) which are affordable and accessible for those who are getting into the world of IT.

Until I can part ways with my some of my work schedule and other commitments, I have decided to write more technical posts, based around the issues I hit during my working days, and anything else interesting I find.

I think engaging in Social Media is one of the key things to keep up to date with the ever-changing world of IT. And fantastically, you usually get answers quicker on twitter than emailing a support/sales desk!!! Making the engagement from companies who have been embracing social media, using this platform as defacto component that sets them apart from the competition.

Now bringing you CaaS – Confused-as-a-Service

Note: This blog post first appeared on my employers website, March 2014, wrote by myself.

Sometimes I am asked my opinion about (insert buzzword of choice here) by a customer or colleague, and as a self-confessed geek, I am then expected to give an informed opinion. But sometimes I cannot as I simply have never come across the term in question, and that’s not a negative thing, so today, I’m going to list some of the most used Buzzwords, and break them down into manageable humorous chunks, as to help you along your journey into researching and investing in new technology.

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) – provides access to Software on-demand, via a Service Provider. The end user has no manageability or control over the infrastructure, which the software is hosted, nor the software’s capabilities, i.e licensed features. Veeam v8 is here – New Features and Upgrade Process

So Veeam’s High Availability Suite is here!!!! Basically v8.

So in this post we are looking at Features and the upgrade of the program, and using the program when updated.

New Features
Backup and Replication

My favourite feature which doesn’t seem to be in the documentation online, is Snapshot Hunter, where Veeam actively looks for and removes any snapshots which havent deleted properly, i.e where vCenter said snapshot removed, and it hasn’t!!!

High-Speed Recovery
• Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server and
Active Directory: Granular-level recovery and low recovery time objectives (RTOs) Continue reading Veeam v8 is here – New Features and Upgrade Process
