Veeam upgrade to v8 – Enterprise Manager fails with Access Control List error

So the other day I blogged about the Veeam v8 upgrade, and as mentioned my Enterprise Manager didn’t work, giving the error;

The Access Control List is not in canonical form and therefore cannot be modified.

So I logged a call with Veeam to get it fixed.

Error Logs

Basically giving logs such as the below.

Embracing Social Media in the IT world

So this domain name was purchased in April 2014, and the blog created at the same time.

I used to teach CompTIA courses, and therefore my main idea, which I haven’t forgotten about, is to create materials (E-books) which are affordable and accessible for those who are getting into the world of IT.

Until I can part ways with my some of my work schedule and other commitments, I have decided to write more technical posts, based around the issues I hit during my working days, and anything else interesting I find.

I think engaging in Social Media is one of the key things to keep up to date with the ever-changing world of IT. And fantastically, you usually get answers quicker on twitter than emailing a support/sales desk!!! Making the engagement from companies who have been embracing social media, using this platform as defacto component that sets them apart from the competition.

Now bringing you CaaS – Confused-as-a-Service

Note: This blog post first appeared on my employers website, March 2014, wrote by myself.

The past 12 months have seen an explosion of marketing Buzzwords, redefined technologies, and a bunch of Vendors endlessly dropping them into conversation like they are going out of fashion.

Sometimes I am asked my opinion about (insert buzzword of choice here) by a customer or colleague, and as a self-confessed geek, I am then expected to give an informed opinion. But sometimes I cannot as I simply have never come across the term in question, and that’s not a negative thing, so today, I’m going to list some of the most used Buzzwords, and break them down into manageable humorous chunks, as to help you along your journey into researching and investing in new technology.

Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) – provides access to Software on-demand, via a Service Provider. The end user has no manageability or control over the infrastructure, which the software is hosted, nor the software’s capabilities, i.e licensed features. Veeam v8 is here – New Features and Upgrade Process

So Veeam’s High Availability Suite is here!!!! Basically v8.

So in this post we are looking at Features and the upgrade of the program, and using the program when updated.

New Features
Backup and Replication

My favourite feature which doesn’t seem to be in the documentation online, is Snapshot Hunter, where Veeam actively looks for and removes any snapshots which havent deleted properly, i.e where vCenter said snapshot removed, and it hasn’t!!!

High-Speed Recovery
• Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server and
Active Directory: Granular-level recovery and low recovery time objectives (RTOs) Continue reading Veeam v8 is here – New Features and Upgrade Process

How to produce good documentation – Part 2 – Rack and Server Diagrams

Oh no, diagrams! But, but, I’m not creative!

So we covered the foundation an environment in part 1, which is that hated word, which is documentation,

But that means you need diagrams, which is something most people struggle with, especially using Visio.

You’re not alone, I was the same, my documentation in my early days was shocking, and then I took on a consultancy role, where I was implementing solutions and having to produce documentation for customer. I had a steep learning curve.

So I’m going to take you into the first steps on how to diagram your Racks and the servers in them.

Visio and your stencils

So your going to need Visio, preferably 2013, but 2010 will be fine. And you need stencils of the hardware you’re creating a diagram of.

The best place to get 90% of your Visio Stencils is VisioCafe.

For others that do not appear on there, its easy enough to just google the vendor name plus Visio ;).

Here’s the file for the Visio diagrams.

Creating a diagram of your rack

So this is something I do for most of my customers, creating a diagram of the rack, mainly to show the bits I’ve stuck in, and so the customer knows which server is which, and then can refer to the rest of the document for what that bit of kit does.
