VMUG Recording – Understanding Data Protection for your VMware Tanzu Container Workloads

As part of my virtual VMUG tour, I submitted a session to the VMUG call for papers covering the subject of Data Protection for Tanzu Kubernetes workloads. (Most of this will apply for any Kubernetes environments).

This was picked up by Erik at the Belgium VMUG for their UserCon in June 2021. After the session the videos remain available on demand for a short time, but there were no plans to upload this for everyone. So thank you to Michael Cade, whom offered to host this session for all on the Cloud Native Data Management – YouTube Channel.

In the below session I cover the following areas;

  • ​What kind of data protection do you need?
  • ​Velero
    • The open source data protection project from VMware
  • ​Tanzu Mission Control
    • The Kubernetes fleet management platform that utilizes Velero from VMware.
  • ​3rd Party Options
    • A nod to the 3rd party ecosystem that offer enterprise Data Protection and Management software such as;
      • Kasten
      • PortWorx

There is even a quick technical demo in there, with a little technical hiccup I had to style out!

vSphere 5.5 – End of Support
  • End of General Support for vSphere 5.5 is September 19, 2018
    • Includes vCenter 5.5, ESXi 5.5, VSAN 5.5
    • KB 51491
  • In the event you are unable to upgrade before the End of General Support (EOGS) and are active on Support and Subscription, you have the option to purchase extended support in one year increments for up to two years beyond the EOGS date.
    • Expect this to be more costly than general support.
    • SLA’s are more akin to that of basic support rather than production support
    • Annual security patch. Includes catastrophic/critical security fixes only
    • Ability to create hot patches for Severity 1 issues only
  • Technical Guidance for vSphere 5.5 is available until September 19, 2020 primarily through the self-help portal.
  • During the Technical Guidance phase, VMware does not offer new hardware support, server/client/guest OS updates, new security patches or bug fixes unless otherwise noted.
    • For example, there was no SPECTRE/Meltdown security patches released for vSphere 5.1

It’s not only the core vSphere 5.5 products that are affected, as we can see from the End-of-Support tracking page provided by virten.net. There are other VMware solutions that you have deployed that may also need upgrading.

Invited to speak at North West England VMUG – 25th February 2015

Great news, I’ve been invited to speak at the North West VMUG on the 25th February. And there is a raffle for a iPad Air 2 and nVidia K2 Graphics card. (That’s the selling points of why to come covered).

The VMUGs are great, you usually get some free training, a couple of vendors taking about their products, with less of a sales slant. And someone from the community taking about their real experiences. For the North West VMUG, Nathan and Steve both put a lot of effort into the agenda ensuring a day that will cater to most, and ensure there is always something you can take away.

This means they put a heavy focus on the people who turn up, and what they want. Which personally, when I attend, is not the usual sales talk about a product. Take the last event for example, Trend where there talking about how great their product is and the fact it beats everyone else. However there was an opportunity to really grill the speaker, who was a techie just like me. I was able to get down to the nitty gritty about trend’s worldwide connected features to detect and block threats in near real-time. The speaker also detailed about one of their biggest customers, and the challenges faced, and how by implementing trend helped them. Rather than the usual, this product is used by 40% of Fortune 500 companies.
