VMware NSX – Just an introduction

With my background in Networking and Virtualisation, VMware’s NSX is something which interests me deeply, as such I’ve attended a handful of sessions online, and also at the UK VMUG where Chris Whal presented on the subject.

Here’s my own interpretation of this new technology.

What is NSX?

Its software-defined networking, you don’t need to buy any hardware to implement it, although you do need a running VMware environment.

Student Revising

Taking Exams? Know your learning style

I’ve noticed a lot of activity online about people taking exams before a particular deadline.

  • VCP Delta Exam
  • VCP-NV (No course requirement if you’re a CCNA/CCNP)
  • CCNP R+S Exam (Last 642 Series exams before 29th Jan 2015)

And just exams in general, regardless of a deadline.

I’m writing this post, mainly because I’ve been struggling to revise. And others will too, also being out of education for a number of years, you forget all those great techniques you never bothered to listen to when you did your exams in high school.

But now, you can re-learn and enhance yourself. 😉

Revision

I hate it, I always have. Its hard, it’s boring, and I could be doing other stuff I hate like tidying up.

Screen Capture Software of Choice – SnagIT

Everyone has their favourites, and mine is SnagIT. It’s not free, but it has such a great interface, I can’t face using anything else.

I use it for capturing shots of the environment, as it is now, and after I’ve changed it, and then annotating them with arrows and text.

The end result is either the shots are used for my client project documentation, or here on in the blog posts.

To show off some of the features, I am going to try to use SnagIT to capture itself.

SnagIT – The capturing side

So SnagIT is broke down into two parts, the capture side, and the editing of the captures.

We can do static images and video, with an in-depth editing of the static side, but little options for video.

So here’s the capture side, which is based around the use of profiles.

Profwiz: Migrating users profiles to a new domain

So a colleague of mine introduced me to this great tool, ForensiT User Profile Wizard.

We were migrating a customer from one domain to a new one, and there is a lot of data stored in the local profile of the users. So we needed a way to move this data into the new profile they will receive when the machine is moved into the new domain.

Note: This is about local machine profiles, and not those on a file server.

1. Login with existing domain\username on the machine, run the Profwiz.exe

  • Enter the new domain name
  • Enter the account name of the user on the name domain

Veeam v8 – Active Directory Restore Wizard in action

So lets look at one of the best features brought to us in Veeam 8, Active Directory Restore Wizard.

2014-11-11_11-12-09

1. Open up the restore, select application items, and then Microsoft Active Directory

2. Select your VM that you want to pull the data back from, and then your restore point for that VM.

Note: I am actually using a restore point created in Version 7!!!!2014-11-11_11-12-31
